Letter in the Mail

8.25.2014

Dear Family

So, the internet is down at the church.  But the new router should be here this week so I will probably be able to email next week.  But just so you can also hear about the past two weeks, I will write this letter.

First of all, we had transfers a week and a half ago.  Elder Garae and I are staying another one in Neoa, till September 25th at least.  We got 4 new Elders to Chuuk Zone – 3 trainers and one who was serving on Guam.  That Elder is Elder Hokao, from Vanuatu, who is actually cousins with my companion Elder Garae so that’s pretty cool.  They speak all their languages together, it’s awesome.  Him and Elder Selander (ex-Zone leader, last transfer) are opening a new island called Fono.  And it is possible I switch out Elder Selander after this transfer which I would love.  I is a tiny island with maybe 400 people on it only about a mile from Weno.  The other three trainees are cool too, 2 are from Utah and one from Southern California.  The ones from Utah just barely graduated High School, ha ha.  They make some good additions to the zone though.  We now have 26 Elders, and only 1 zone so it is a way big zone.  I heard it could be split soon though, so we will see.

In other news, we had a baptism on Saturday for a kid named Esner, who turns 11 tomorrow.  It is Rodrick’s little brother.  He is awesome and stays all three meetings at church and goes to Primary even if Elder Garae and I can’t go with him.  He is a stud.  Their older sister, Anisa, has been to church twice now and should be baptized on Sept 6th.

Oh, also, Elder Telona is back to my district.  So everyone I have or have had as companions are in my district.  It’s a pretty cool district.  Elder Rainey goes home this transfer though so that’s a bummer.  And I’m only 6 transfers after him.  We got a couple new investigators last week, one that came to church before we even taught her.  She is living with a really strong recent convert named Meysina, so as long as she doesn’t have word of wisdom problems, she could be baptized on the 6th as well.  We might get CN and JR finally baptized on this Saturday (30th) but we still haven’t gotten permission yet.

The 2nd counselor in the District Presidency got a new 32” TV his wife sent from America…pretty much no one in Chuuk has TV’s like that, if even a TV, so all the men in the branch were stoked about that, and a couple went over to his house after church just to check it out.  To Chuukese people, that TV is like a brand new car to an American.

We saw a miracle (well, heard) with the father of some recent converts on the mountain.  His name is Meisi and when I first met him back in May, he was in really bad shape and smoked and drink and couldn’t walk so he never left his house.  We do family nights with their whole family, and I never really thought he paid too much attention.  Well, the other day I was talking to a member (his daughter-in-law) and she said ever since we started doing family night, he has been trying to be better because he is jealous of how good his kids are doing in their lives and now, Meisi doesn’t smoke or drink and walks around and stuff.  And, the Protestants one morning came to his house to give him a paper that said to come to church to get his calling and he looked at it and just ripped it up ha ha and said his church is the Mormon church.  Super big miracle because if you can get the father/grandfather of a family to convert, it makes it 100 times easier for his kids/grandkids.  So this is huge!  Hopefully we see many more miracles with this family.

Well, I love you all!  Sorry internet was down!  Hope you get this!

Love,  Elder Schroath
